CTF Platform Rundown [WORK]


No time to sleep for the hacker teams that enrolled in the latest edition of DefCamp Capture the Flag! Over the past weekend, from 5th to 7th of December, one of the most shattering and rebellious security CTF competitions in Central Eastern Europe took place on the educational platform CyberEDU.ro.




CTF Platform Rundown



Maul is a rundown station, which looks more like a post apocalyptic area. This medium size arena is extremely jagged, blocking the view at times. The massive fuel tanks provide some decent cover, while sneaking in and rushing out of the enemy base.


The map has plenty of features that make it stand out from other maps. For starters, the bases are mobile (the SP campaign calls them "unstable"). At certain periods of the match, the platform where the flag resides will alternate between the lower (deadend) and upper (exposed) levels. Above these platforms there's a pool of conductive water. Swimming on it is NOT recommended. Also at certain time periods, a healing wall will move throughout the level healing every player it touches by 10 HP (up to the maximum of 199 HP). Another useful feature are the Translocator tubes, set at the upper level between both team courtyards, which serve as another attack entrance. Throwing the Translocator disc at these tubes will teleport them to the opposite courtyard, avoiding.

For this particular challenge, users are given an application created for the Windows mobile platform. There are a couple of ways to go about solving this challenge; however, approaching it statically is probably the easiest versus setting up the Microsoft Windows mobile emulator or debugging the code on an actual phone. Should the user run the application in an emulated environment, they are presented with the following:


To show you how to apply and use this methodology, I chose to show you how I successfully reverse the third phase of the bomb lab, developed by the Carnegie Mellon University, which @_py makes available on his CTF platform skidophrenia.


In Objective 1, we will utilize a novel genetic platform called Uni-Vect, developed by the PI of this project, while he was working at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). Uni-Vect will allow for transient expression of TFs in CAR T cells. Additionally, we will design and test systems with constitutively expressed TFs (cTF-CAR T cells). We will create CD19-targeting CAR T cells upgraded with ectopic expression of two key transcription factors with a hypothesis to create CAR T cells with a fitness profile associated with a capacity to expand, persist and mediate cancer regression after infusion.


Attendees will learn how to create and customize their own implant using our open-source plans, as well as how to implement its current functionality for immediate engagements. They will also leave with a new platform from which to innovate custom implants. Live demos will be used to show these new tactics against real world infrastructure.
